Spinal Cord Injury

Of the types of back and common neck injury that occur, spinal cord injury is the most severe. There are currently no treatments that enable the spinal cord to grow back to its original condition. Spinal cord injuries range from mild to serious, and the injury often results in loss of sensation as well as muscular control.

The spinal cord is a collection of nerves that control self-regulating bodily organs, such as the lungs, heart, gastrointestinal tract and glands. Consequently, spinal cord injuries often disrupt the function of various bodily systems.

The type of spinal cord injury may vary from bruising (bleeding), to tearing or complete severing of the cord, called transection. The type of spinal cord injury in addition to the location of the spinal cord injury, determines the severity of damage. When the spinal cord is completely severed the area of the body below the injury will be paralyzed, resulting in paraplegia (paralysis from the waist down) or quadriplegia (paralysis from the neck down). In some cases the victim may have impaired or failed breathing capability and need respiratory support for breathing.

Caring for a spinal cord injury victim with serious injury is a life long endeavor, often involving teams of professionals, not only to prevent further complications, but also to assist remaining body functions. The medical expense is extreme. If the spinal cord injury was suffered through fault of another, it's important to retain an experienced attorney and file a personal injury claim as soon as possible.
